O God, who sent thy Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: call us from comfortable complacency to preach, teach, and plant thy church on new frontiers, after the example of thy servant James Lloyd Breck; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: 1 Corinthians 3:4-11

⁴ For when one says, ‘I belong to Paul’, and another, ‘I belong to Apollos’, are you not merely human?

⁵ What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. ⁶I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. ⁷So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. ⁸The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. ⁹For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building.

¹⁰ According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. ¹¹For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.

Psalm: Psalm 98:1–4

¹ Sing to the Lord a new song, *
       for he has done marvelous things.
² With his right hand and his holy arm *
       has he won for himself the victory.
³ The Lord has made known his victory; *
       his righteousness has he openly shown in
                                the sight of the nations.
⁴ He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to
                                the house of Israel, *
       and all the ends of the earth have seen the

Gospel: Mark 4:26-32

²⁶ He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, ²⁷and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. ²⁸The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. ²⁹But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’

³⁰ He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? ³¹It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; ³²yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’
