Old Testament: Isaiah 26:1-8

¹ On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

We have a strong city;
    he sets up victory
    like walls and bulwarks.
² Open the gates,
    so that the righteous nation that keeps faith
    may enter in.
³ Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace—
    in peace because they trust in you.
⁴ Trust in the Lord for ever,
    for in the Lord God^[a]
    you have an everlasting rock.
⁵ For he has brought low
    the inhabitants of the height;
    the lofty city he lays low.
He lays it low to the ground,
    casts it to the dust.
⁶ The foot tramples it,
    the feet of the poor,
    the steps of the needy.

⁷ The way of the righteous is level;
    O Just One, you make smooth the path of the righteous.
⁸ In the path of your judgements,
    O Lord, we wait for you;
your name and your renown
    are the soul’s desire.

Psalm: Psalm 57:7-11

⁷ My heart is firmly fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; *
I will sing and make melody.
⁸ Wake up, my spirit;
awake, lute and harp; *
I myself will waken the dawn.
⁹ I will confess you among the peoples, O Lord; *
I will sing praise to you among the nations.
¹⁰ For your loving-kindness is greater than the heavens, *
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
¹¹ Exalt yourself above the heavens, O God, *
and your glory over all the earth.

New Testament: Colossians 3:12-15

¹² As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. ¹³ Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. ¹⁴ Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. ¹⁵ And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.

Gospel: Matthew 5:38-45

³⁸ ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” ³⁹ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; ⁴⁰ and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; ⁴¹ and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. ⁴² Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

⁴³ ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” ⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ⁴⁵ so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
