Patrick of Ireland, Bishop and Missionary, 461

The Collect:

Rite I:
Almighty God, who in thy providence didst choose thy servant Patrick to be the apostle to the Irish people, to bring those who were wandering in darkness and error to the true light and knowledge of thee: Grant us so to walk in that way that we may come at last to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rite II:
Almighty God, in your providence you chose your servant Patrick to be the apostle to the Irish people, to bring those who were wandering in darkness and error to the true light and knowledge of you: Grant us so to walk in that way that we may come at last to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

1 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts.5As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. 8So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.

Psalm: Psalm 96

1 Sing to the Lord a new song; *
       sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.
2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; *
       proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations *
       and his wonders among all peoples.
4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; *
       he is more to be feared than all gods.
5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; *
       but it is the Lord who made the heavens.
6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! *
       Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!
7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; *
       ascribe to the Lord honor and power.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; *
       bring offerings and come into his courts.
9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; *
       let the whole earth tremble before him.
10 Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King! *
       he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved;
       he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
    let the sea thunder and all that is in it; *
       let the field be joyful and all that is therein.
12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy
   before the Lord when he comes, *
       when he comes to judge the earth.
13 He will judge the world with righteousness *
       and the peoples with his truth.

Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
