The Collect:

Rite I:
O God, who in thy providence didst call Joseph Schereschewsky to the ministry of this church and gave him the gifts and the perseverance to translate the Holy Scriptures: Inspire us, by his example and prayers, to commit our talents to thy service, confident that thou dost uphold those whom thou dost call; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rite II:

First Lesson: Isaiah 12:1-6 

¹ You will say on that day:
I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
    for though you were angry with me,
your anger turned away,
    and you comforted me.

² Surely God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid,
for the Lord God is my strength and my might;
    he has become my salvation.

³ With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. ⁴ And you will say on that day:

Give thanks to the Lord,
    call on his name;
make known his deeds among the nations;
    proclaim that his name is exalted.

⁵ Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be known in all the earth.
⁶ Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion,
    for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Psalm: Psalm 90:1-12 

¹ Lord, you have been our refuge *
from one generation to another.
² Before the mountains were brought forth,
or the land and the earth were born, *
from age to age you are God.
³ You turn us back to the dust and say, *
“Go back, O child of earth.”
⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday
when it is past *
and like a watch in the night.
⁵ You sweep us away like a dream; *
we fade away suddenly like the grass.
⁶ In the morning it is green and flourishes; *
in the evening it is dried up and withered.
⁷ For we consume away in your displeasure; *
we are afraid because of your wrathful indignation.
⁸ Our iniquities you have set before you, *
and our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
⁹ When you are angry, all our days are gone; *
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
¹⁰ The span of our life is seventy years,
perhaps in strength even eighty; *
yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow,
for they pass away quickly and we are gone.
¹¹ Who regards the power of your wrath? *
who rightly fears your indignation?
¹² So teach us to number our days *
that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 4:11-18

¹¹For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. ¹²So death is at work in us, but life in you.

¹³ But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, ¹⁴because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. ¹⁵Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

¹⁶ So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. ¹⁷For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, ¹⁸because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

Gospel: Luke 15:1–7

¹Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. ²And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’

³So he told them this parable: ⁴‘Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? ⁵When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. ⁶And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.” ⁷Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
