Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost: Labor Day Weekend 2014

August 31, 2014

September 1 is Labor Day, a federal holiday in the United States to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers. Labor Day has been observed on the first Monday in September since President Grover Cleveland declared it a national holiday in 1894. In accordance with the Fourth Mark of the Five Marks of Mission – “to seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation” – the Episcopal Church has long been active in passing legislation to protect the rights of workers.
