Every year on Columbus Day, the United States is reminded of the tragic history of how the “New World” was “discovered” in 1492 – a land already populated by over 15 million indigenous peoples. And each year on Columbus Day, the church confronts the difficult truth that various Christian denominations had a hand in colonizing and assimilating the indigenous people in this country.
