The Episcopal Church is accepting applications for the position of Chief Legal Officer. Major, Lindsey, & Africa has been engaged as the search firm for this position.

The Chief Legal Officer will be responsible for assuring the reliable and timely provision of high-quality legal advice and services on secular legal matters to the Presiding Bishop, the President of the House of Deputies, the Executive Office of the General Convention, the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, and Executive Council.

A broad based, generalist capacity and background will be vital to supporting the diversified legal issues encountered in an international organization the size and breadth of The Episcopal Church. Responsibilities will range from hands-on business law matters, pre-litigation and litigation management, human resources, employment law and non-profit law, to defining and developing legal policies and procedures, legal operating guidelines, and conducting legal compliance reviews across an organization with multiple stakeholders.

The Chief Legal Officer reports to, and is accountable to, the Presiding Bishop and will serve as a senior member of the Presiding Bishop’s leadership team.

Candidates must be a member of, or have the ability to become a member of, the New York bar within 18 months of hire or register as in-house counsel in New York.

According to Canon I.4.2(h): Upon joint nomination by the Chair (Presiding Bishop) and the Vice-Chair (President of the House of Deputies), the (Executive) Council shall appoint a Chief Legal Officer who shall function as general counsel and serve at the pleasure of, and report and be accountable to, the Chair.
