March 2, 2022
Office of Public Affairs

Bishops of The Episcopal Church will gather for the House of Bishops spring retreat March 15-21 at Camp Allen in Navasota, Texas. This will be the first in-person assembly of the House of Bishops since September 2019; it will focus on themes of hunger, honesty, humility, hopefulness, and hospitality in these days of the evolving pandemic. Meetings have been held virtually since March 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Given the retreat format, the bishops will spend time in fellowship, study, prayer, and sabbath. They will welcome guest speakers Cynthia Bourgeault and Pádraig Ó Tuama. Additionally, the bishops will prepare for The Episcopal Church’s 80th General Convention and Lambeth Conference—both taking place this summer—and have a business meeting scheduled for the morning of Saturday, March 19.

Media wishing to attend this gathering in person should contact Lisa Webb by March 9 to secure credentials. The Office of Public Affairs will also provide updates.

The House of Bishops comprises all active and retired bishops within The Episcopal Church—nearly 300 members—with the presiding bishop serving as president. The church’s governing body, the General Convention, is composed of the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. These groups meet and act separately, and both must concur to adopt legislation. General Convention meets every three years, and the House of Bishops generally meets twice a year between conventions in a non-legislative capacity.
