The United Methodist Church is a worldwide mainline Protestant denomination formed in 1968 by a merger of the Methodist Church (founded in the 1700s by John and Charles Wesley) and the United Brethren in Christ Church.

In 2000, The Episcopal Church’s General Convention authorized a dialogue with the United Methodist Church that has resulted in shared celebrations of the Eucharist between the two churches and a proposal for full communion, titled “A Gift to the World: Co-laborers in the Healing of Brokenness.”
