LGBTQ+ in the Church

For decades, LGBTQ+ Episcopalians and allies have worked to make The Episcopal Church a place of belonging and inclusion. In 2026, we mark the 50th anniversary of our affirmation that LGBTQ+ people have “a full and equal claim to the love, acceptance, and pastoral concern and care of the church.”

Today, discernment for the ministries of bishop, priest, deacon, and lay leadership is open to all. We celebrate and give thanks for the many gifts and sacrifices of our LGBTQ+ leaders and siblings across the church.

LGBTQ+ history in The Episcopal Church

From a 1976 churchwide resolution affirming equality for LGBTQ+ people, to the 2003 election of the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, to a 2015 amendment of church canons to permit any couple the rite of holy matrimony, The Episcopal Church continues to stand with its LGBTQ+ siblings as beloved humans made in God’s image.
