Endowment and Investments
The Episcopal Church endowment is the result of generous giving by generations of Episcopal Church members and congregations. The endowment comprises more than 1,100 individual trust funds of which the church is the owner and beneficiary, as well as funds benefiting other entities within the church or the Anglican Communion. Endowment assets are held in a common investment pool with trust funds owned by and benefiting individual Episcopal dioceses and congregations. The Episcopal Church endowment is managed by the Executive Council Investment Committee.
The endowment is invested primarily in publicly traded stocks of U.S. and non-U.S. corporations, with smaller allocations to long-term bonds, hedge funds, and private equity. A portion of the endowment pays dividends to support the churchwide budget at an annual rate set by the Executive Council. In addition to the endowment, the church holds operating cash, certificates of deposit, and short-term bond investments.
Investing with The Episcopal Church
Episcopal dioceses, congregations, and affiliated organizations may convert with The Episcopal Church endowment in the same investment pool. Coinvestment with the endowment allows these entities to benefit from the church’s investment expertise and ensure that their investing is aligned with the church’s mission and values through its corporate social responsibility program.
Coinvestment funds are held in separate trust accounts (“custodial trusts”) controlled by the investors that allow them to access funds as needed. The church does not charge any fees for managing the custodial trust account, which therefore enjoy the same investment returns as the endowment. Custodial trust holders may elect to receive their share of the annual dividends set by the Executive Council or to reinvest those funds.
