Sermons and Bible Studies
Salt, Light, and Stardust, Epiphany 5 (A) – February 9, 2020
[RCL]: Isaiah 58:1-9a, [9b-12]; Psalm 112:1-9, (10); 1 Corinthians 2:1-12, [13-16]; Matthew 5:13-20 Where are we? Who are we? Why are we here? What are we meant to be doing? How are we to go about this thing we call life? These are the elemental questions that humans have been pondering for thousands of years. […]
The Wrath of God, Proper 19 (C) – 2019
[RCL]: Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10 “The wrath of God is his relentless compassion, pursuing us even when we are at our worst. Lord, give us mercy to bear your mercy.” – Maggie Ross, from The Fire of Your Life Perhaps it helps us to remember that the fourteenth chapter […]
We Are His, Epiphany 4 (C) – 2019
“When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went […]
This Voice Has Come for Your Sake, Not for Mine, Lent 5 (B) – 2018
Some foreigners, outsiders, show up for the festival. They say, “We wish to see Jesus.” Philip runs to Andrew and presumably says something along the lines of, “Hey, there are all these foreigners who want to see Jesus! What should we do?” Andrew obviously has no answers. Who wants foreigners around at a time like […]
The Work of Christmas, Christmas Day (III) – 2017
This is John’s Christmas. This is incarnation. No shepherds, no angels, no crèche, no Magi. John’s story is so utterly unlike the familiar crèche or pageant. How on earth could one make this, John’s story of the incarnation, into a pageant? It begins before time itself! Note the opening words: “In the beginning…” The first […]
Awakening to God’s Presence, Proper 27 (A) – 2017
Archbishop William Temple said, “The source of humility is the habit of realizing the presence of God.” We may as well face it, none of us likes to wait. Modern culture demands immediacy. Whatever we want, we want it now. If that’s not enough, we want the newest and the best, we want the latest […]
Are We Ready to Choose?, Proper 23 (A) – 2017
The gospel for today begs allegory and analogy, leading inevitably to dividing people into groups of good and bad. It is an invitation to play the Blame Game. Coupled with our innate curiosity, like Pandora, we cannot help but want to know just who is going to be bound hand and foot and cast into […]
Light!, Lent 4 (A) – 2017
The gospels need to be approached as a sort of unfolding – the unfolding of who Jesus is and what that can mean about who we are called to be. So perhaps it helps to think of a time-lapse video of a flower opening, one petal at a time until the entire flower is open […]
Jesus Is Hungry, Easter 3 (B) – 2015
Alleluia, Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! So there is Jesus standing among his closest friends, the disciples. That is meant to represent us. He says, “Shalom!” Loosely translated, that comes across as, “Peace be with you.” This is unfortunately an inadequate attempt to put shalom into English. Shalom means much more than “peace.” Or […]
Let Your Heart Be Light, Epiphany 2 (B) – 2015
“You will see greater things than these.” Like Nathanael, we are all looking for signs. We search high and low, near and far, for some confirmation that God is with us. When really, as Jesus says to Nathanael, we will see greater things, if only we will open the eyes of our hearts. It can […]
Why Do You Stand Looking Into Heaven?, Ascension Day – 2014
“Why do you stand looking into heaven?” ask two men dressed in white robes to the disciples staring up into space. Indeed, why do we stand looking into heaven? And where should we be looking? Whenever a comet flies by, whenever there is a total or partial eclipse, people in record number are out looking […]
God’s Passion, Our Passion, Good Friday – 2014
Each year, year after year after year, Christians gather on Good Friday to rehearse this story – what we call the Passion Narrative. On Palm Sunday we read versions from Matthew, Mark and Luke. On Good Friday it has always been from John. Each gospel offers a slightly different view of what happened on that […]
