Lutherans—so named because their faith came out of Martin Luther’s efforts to reform the church in the 16th century—came to America from Europe in the 17th century. In 1988, three Lutheran church bodies merged to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
 
The Episcopal Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America entered into a relationship of full communion on Jan. 6, 2001, after 30 years of dialogue. The document “Called to Common Mission” establishes the basis and procedures for the relationship, which includes the free exchange and movement of clergy and lay members between the two churches.
