Unleash the Power of Age: May is Older Americans Month

November 6, 2014

May is Older Americans Month.

Older Americans Month was established under President Kennedy in 1963 – a time when only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Read about the history of Older Americans Month on the Administration of Aging website.

Now, our nation is in the midst of a boom in the aging population. People are living longer and staying healthier and more active much later in life. In 2011, the first wave of the 78 million baby boom generation turned 65. More than ever, we need to recognize the need for and give attention to ministries with older adults in our faith communities.

The theme for Older Americans Month 2013, Unleash the Power of Age.

Throughout May I will be posting videos reflecting on various aspects of aging, our church and theology. I hope this video series will both challenge and inspire you.

How will your faith community recognize Older Americans Month?
