Episcopal congregations seeking ways to observe Pride Month and World Refugee Day in June have a special opportunity to focus on LGBTQ+ and refugee communities through Episcopal Migration Ministries’ new Rainbow Initiative.

As of early May, 15 groups in the U.S. and Europe have partnered with EMM as “Rainbow Initiative Congregations/Communities,” committed to learning about and supporting LGBTQ+ forced migrants during the worldwide activities in June focused on those communities.

“We are thrilled at the interest and commitment of those who have already partnered with us, and we invite other churches and communities to consider joining this intentional focus on extending radical welcome to LGBTQ+ forced migrants,” said Sarah Shipman, director of operations for EMM.

Participants work with EMM to discern activities and direction for showing solidarity with LGBTQ+ forced migrants, such as highlighting them in Pride worship services and march activities or on World Refugee Day. Other options include holding fundraisers to benefit programs that provide housing and food, hosting film screenings, and providing lodging for LGBTQ+ forced migrants.

EMM announced The Rainbow Initiative in January, created in response to General Convention Resolution D045.

“We were overwhelmed with the amount of support the resolution received at the time of the online (General Convention) hearings,” said Janet Day-Strehlow, who proposed the resolution as part of the Committee on Social Justice and International Policy. “But even more overwhelming is to see how EMM is putting feet to the resolution by the creation of the Rainbow Initiative, plotting a course for the future, to give not only visibility but tools for our congregations and other groups to work with. I am excited to see where the Rainbow Initiative will go and filled with gratitude to EMM.”

Honrarán en junio a los migrantes forzados LGBTQ+ mediante la Iniciativa Arco Iris del Ministerio Episcopal de Migración

Las congregaciones episcopales que buscan formas de celebrar en junio el Mes del Orgullo [Homosexual] y el Día Mundial de los Refugiados tienen una oportunidad especial de centrarse en las comunidades LGBTQ+ y de refugiados a través de la nueva Iniciativa Arco Iris del Ministerios Episcopal de Migración (EMM, por su sigla en inglés).

A principios de mayo, 15 agrupaciones en EE.UU. y Europa, se han asociado con el EMM como «Congregaciones/Comunidades de la Iniciativa Arco Iris», comprometidos a entender y a apoyar a los migrantes forzados LGBTQ+ durante las actividades mundiales en junio centradas en esas comunidades.

«Estamos encantados con el interés y el compromiso de los que ya se han asociado con nosotros, e invitamos a otras iglesias y comunidades a considerar unirse a este enfoque consciente para extender una bienvenida totalmente novedosa a los migrantes forzados LGBTQ+», dijo Sarah Shipman, directora de operaciones del EMM.

Los participantes trabajan con el EMM para discernir las actividades y la dirección al objeto de mostrar solidaridad con los migrantes forzados LGBTQ+, como es el de destacarlos en los oficios de culto y actividades del Desfile del Orgullo o en el Día Mundial del Refugiado. Otras opciones incluyen la realización de eventos para recaudar fondos en beneficio de los programas que ofrecen vivienda y alimentos, la realización de proyecciones de películas y la provisión de alojamiento para migrantes forzados LGBTQ+.

El EMM anunció la Iniciativa Arco Iris en enero, creada en respuesta a la Resolución D045 de la Convención General.

«Nos sentimos desbordados por la cantidad de apoyo que recibió la resolución en el momento de las audiencias en línea (de la Convención General)», dijo Janet Day-Strehlow, quien propuso la resolución como parte del Comité de Justicia Social y Política Internacional. «Pero aún más abrumador es ver cómo el EMM está aplicando la resolución mediante la creación de la Iniciativa Arco Iris, marcando el rumbo para el futuro, a fin de dar no sólo visibilidad sino herramientas para que nuestras congregaciones y otros grupos laboren. Me siento emocionada por ver hacia dónde irá la Iniciativa Arco Iris y estoy llena de gratitud hacia el EMM».
