Lent 2026: Gratitude and Reciprocity

Updates from the UTO Formation and Development Committee
Lent is upon us! As a child, Lent was always my favorite season in the church. I think this was at least in part because I liked the color change in the sanctuary, the palpable mood change at the services, and the opportunity to think about what I could give up for Lent. I grew up in a place and culture that took fasting for Lent very seriously, and so I always looked forward to how this practice would connect me with my faith during the 40 days of the season.
The Book of Common Prayer tells us that Lent is a time for intentional reconnection with God. This reconnection will likely look different for each of us depending on the spiritual practices that we find nourishing—fasting is just one of the many ways we can mark this important season in our liturgical calendar! As you prepare for Lent, I highly recommend UTO’s Lenten materials for this year. All our materials for 2026 are inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s fantastic book, “The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World,” which focuses on how the natural world functions as a gift economy. One of our offerings is a book group about this book, which you can register for here.
Inspired by the book, we have put together an incredible panel of Indigenous Episcopal leaders who will discuss gratitude and reciprocity on March 24 at 12 p.m. Eastern time. You don’t want to miss this! Find more information and register for the panel here.
As is always the case with UTO, we have also prepared Lenten materials for your entire congregation, including printable prayers, bulletin inserts, and calendars. For the youngest parishioners in your community, we have prepared a Gratitude Challenge, coloring sheets, and a free lesson for children’s ministry. All these resources can be found here.
However you decide to engage with the season of Lent this year, we hope it is a meaningful and nourishing season for you that helps you deepen your faith as you commit to increased gratitude.
