The focus of the 2014 conference will be the role of the Church in helping those with addictions and those in recovery. The dynamics of addiction in church communities will be explored through systems theory, focusing on the role of the family in recovery.
Trinity Church, listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, was chosen as the site of this year’s conference based on the unique ministry they developed that provides support to the recovery community in Western New York.
The conference experience will include practical, reproducible, educational offerings; participation in Trinity’s innovative Twelve Step service; and fellowship with others involved in recovery ministries. Conference attendees will also visit the Hope Center, a new initiative of the Episcopal Diocese of WNY creating a “safe place for recovery.”
Saturday morning attendees will participate in a live session that is a model for training clergy and lay people in your own city, parish or diocese. This conference is designed for anyone that is affected by addicts or addictions. Addiction is a family disease. We will have several sessions on codependency and how alcoholism affects others.
The Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke, adjunct professor at General Theological Seminary in New York City, pioneered a tremendously successful course of study on the Church’s role in the treatment of alcoholism and addictive illness.
The Rev. Dr. John MacDougall, D. Min., is Director of Spiritual Guidance at Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center, and serves as the clinical director for the Spiritual Care Department and the Family Program in Hazelden’s Center City, Minnesota campus.
